Rocks in the Treetops

Each morning these Rock Pigeons or Rock Doves perch high in a tree across the street watching and waiting for seed and other treats to be scattered across the grass along the side of the house. Sometimes I can hear them cooing. Sometimes I watch their fluffy white feathers float and circle their way to the ground • Have you ever wondered why we find so many pigeon feathers around the yard or garden or park? Let me tell you! Their feathers are loosely attached to the skin. This helps when a predator catches them because when a large number of feathers come out in the predator’s mouth, it can be enough of a distraction for the pigeon to escape. Cool, right? • The loose attachment also accounts for their feathers coming out when they’re startled, taking off or landing. Now you know! • I’m so happy the weekend is here. It’s been a long, difficult week • Until tomorrow...
