Sheol an Iolaire

A lone, juvenile, gull perches on one of the 300 posts making up the Sheol an Iolaire memorial in Stornoway harbour. Most on board HMY Iolaire, which sank within sight of Stornoway on 1 January 1919, were young men, many aged under 20. Of those returning home, 201 did not survive.
