HELIANTHUS
Once again, I was asleep at the switch and missed Flower Friday. So I'll do the flower thing today instead.
This is the giant sunflower (Helianthus sp.), one of the fall blooming asters. This one is specific to the production of seeds. Lots of locals grow them and just let the seedheads hang all winter as a source of food for indigenous avians. I should mention that this particular seedhead exceeds a foot in diameter...that's a lot of sunflower seeds.
EXTRA: For you math majors, notice the arrangement of the seeds in spiral fashion which exhibits as an illustration of the Fibonacci sequence.
