Mushroom
Orange Bonnet Mushroom (Mycena acicula) - the www tells me that they are "far too small and insubstantial to be of culinary interest", so noone knows whether they are toxic or not. These mushrooms were less than 1cm across and I only spotted them because, after a day of mist, the sun burned through just before sunset and lit up their lovely orange caps and stems among the beech leaves.
I am a Friend of the Victoria & Albert Museum and yesterday evening attended a Zoom talk by Dan Pearson about a forest and garden in Japan. He has just published a book called "Tokachi Millennium Forest - pioneering a new way of gardening with Nature" (which Amazon delivered about 12 hours after I ordered it), which looks lovely. One of the things he mentioned is that the Japanese identify 72 seasons, each of about 5 days long. Japan is currently in the "Hibernating Creatures Close Their Doors" season, which is when butterfly larvae harden into chrysalises for the winter. My garden is in the "Beech Nuts Fall Off and Provide Food for Wood Pigeons" season. How about yours?
