Little W from Great W

We've had a smashing day in the sunshine!  We drove to Kettlewell early-ish and set off to walk up Great Whernside, which is one of those Yorkshire conundrums.  It is not as high as Whernside, one of the three peaks, and yet it has the 'Great'.  I think it's Great because it is a much pleasanter walk and affords fabulous views 360 degrees  on a day like today.

The way up gave us views across to Pendle Hill and back towards Kettlewell.  Then the three peaks came in to view in the distance as we ascended the Hag Dyke Path.  Much of the walk is on green paths which is also great for my crunchy knees.  There were a couple of false summits before we reached the ridge and the trig point/summit cairn but wow it was worth it.  After a brief refreshment stop at the shelter further along the ridge, we stayed high in order to take in the views of Nidderdale and beyond to the east and the further extents of Coverdale to the north east.

Finally descending the Fell, we crossed the road and picked up the Tor Dyke path which contoured around to Cam Head and then we came down the long spur back in to the village, giving us great views back to Great Whernside and our walking route.  Kettlewell was much busier than when we had left but we were lucky to spot a café where a group were just leaving the outdoor area, so we ordered drinks and HUGE slices of chocolate cake (one of which came home with us!)  I also got to use my NHS app on the QR sign in.

A grand day out!  My blip is taken from the ridge and is of Little Whernside, with Coverdale beyond.
