Whalley Viaduct

Whalley Viaduct is the longest and largest viaduct in Lancashire although I can't say I had heard of it before. It crosses the River Calder at Whalley near Blackburn and was built between 1846 and 1850. According to the website I got this information from  it has 48 arches so there is a lot more to it than shown in my picture.

I was in Whalley to do some geocaching before Chester's game at Padiham and I thought it looked an attractive place. My walk took me alongside the viaduct and across the river.

The match was our last pre-season game before the season starts properly on Saturday . Unfortunately it will also be my last Chester game for the foreseeable future because lockdown regulations mean that competitive matches have to be held behind closed doors which is a disaster for clubs at our level, step 6 in the football pyramid. On Saturday it is the FA Cup and Chester are playing at Worksop for which no away fans will be allowed in. However the rules mean that I could attend the FA Cup tie down the road between Runcorn Linnets and Marine. 

Anyway Chester won the game 6-0 so at least I got to see a few goals before the lockdown begins.
