Escaping

Difficult to believe it’s October tomorrow. I’m very fond of this calendar which I got in Alaska last year, and resist looking forward to see what the next month’s picture is going to be. Allowing for leap years I reckon I should be able to recycle it in 2048, which might be a bit optimistic. Most months this year have had loads of stuff crossed out; in another world I should be in walking in the American Rockies.
The weather has significantly deteriorated which is not, in my view, entirely unwelcome. I had always imagined that when I stopped working I would spend the mornings re- reading all of Iris Murdoch’s novels which I eventually got round to starting today beginning with The Philosopher’s Pupil. Philosophy, a natural spa, and idiosyncratic characters including a dog (there is always a dog, although I don’t believe she and John Bayley ever had one) is just best way to escape. I even forgot to watch the FM’s daily update, and intentionally avoided the Uk one later in the afternoon.
