Lost masterpiece?
In the process of clearing out Mrs L's late mother's house (a process now in its second year thanks to Covid-19) we came across a painting in oil on canvas by Rudolf Quittner (1872-1910) a lesser known Austrian post-impressionist. Quittner was a pupil of Camille Pissarro and his works were promoted by Claude Monet. He is probably best known for his View of the Sacre Coeur from Montmartre , Paris which you can see here. Our particular painting is titled Rue St Vincent, Montmartre. The latter was a popular haunt of artists in the late 19th century and an almost identical view was painted by Georges Seurat in 1884 here. Unfortunately our painting is in much need of repair, cleaning and re-framing. All of that will probably cost more than the painting is valued at. Nevertheless, here it is covered up and awaiting collection by a specialist firm. One day I hope to be able to provide a blip of the restored work.
