Tiny opals
The opals in this pendant are tiny, smaller than a standard grain of rice. In daylight they look milky but under strong artificial light they flash all the colours of the rainbow.
Until vast deposits of opal were found in Australia in the 19th century, the only known source was Slovakia. While Australian opal has often been cited as accounting for 95-97% of the world's precious opal, there are also significant quantities in Ethiopia, USA and Mexico.
Opal is the national gemstone of Australia.
