Battle-scarred?
A stop-off at Western Springs Park is always worthwhile. A bit of an oasis in the centre of a big city, it attracts lots of people at any time of the day, so the birds are quite unafraid of humans and close-up shots are easy to get.
This pukeko looks as though he might have had a bit of a hard time. They can be very aggressive birds, particularly in defending territory or young, and I suspect all those marks on the bill and frontal shield might be signs of past battles.
