Japanese Maple
It's hard to work up the enthusiasm to get out when the weather is so dreich, but I enjoyed a slightly damp walk round Southey Wood this afternoon, to celebrate National Fungus Day. The fungi haven't yet reached their peak around Peterborough, though this rainy weekend should help them on their way. Nevertheless, I found more than on my previous visit, including some quite spectacular clumps of Bulbous Honey-fungus and Conifer Tuft. Ferns were looking good too, with many bearing ripe spores, and the Japanese Maple bushes are now at peak colour - guaranteed to brighten the spirits on a dreary afternoon.
