lock and dam

heading home from camping trip (day 4) -the weekend is over too soon

(rainy this morn) The road we drive goes right by the bottom of the lake- the bridge can be seen in background, with truck on it. the Kissimmee River was changed to a straight canal and a dam built to manage the water for irrigation and flooding (as were others in the state). Now work has begun to change it back to winding, I believe as part of the project to restore more natural water flow to the Everglades.

the lock on the left is used to go from the lake to river, or vice versa, since the levels are not the same now. (we haven't ever done this. Lake Kissimmee, besides being 3rd largest in state, is part of a chain of several lakes, connected by creeks and canals without locks, that keeps us occupied without coming down this way..)
