Autumnal

The leaves are turning. This maple at Arley seems especially advanced.

Part of a walk took us across a field recently planted, I guess with winter wheat or barley. The footpath leads past two separate oak trees which the farmer has retained. Under each a broad circle of fallen acorns (extra). It is definitely a mast year. The trees are this prolific every 5- 10 years apparently. But how, across the country, do they know that this is the year ?
