Windows Walk

Kahangarake walking trail.
We walked the Windows walk which is the most amazing series of hand dug tunnels from the 1880’s created during the Gold Rush of that time. From the tunnels the rock was extracted. There are about 15 storeys of tunnels in the hill. The gold was all processed in the area then shipped out from a local port at Paeroa.
In this photo you can see the walkway that we followed to explore the tunnels and old buildings left behind.
