Why?

I did the same with my three hyacinth bulbs.
I filled the vases with water to the narrow part of the vase and put the bulbs there, skimming the water. Then I left them in the dark for two weeks.
This is what I found today. One is fine, the other is rotten and mushy, and the third bulb hasn't grown a single root.
I wonder why?
But life is like that sometimes, isn't it?
