My street No 3. The memorial.
I finally got round to doing another photo of "My Street".
This is a little further up the road, at the Half-Way-House roundabout.
A large house was built here in the 1800s by the Ackroyd family, on the site of a former colliery.
The Yorkshire cricketer Alfred Ackroyd was born here in 1858.
David Hamam Thornton, director and founder member of Bradford Dyers Association, lived here 1902 - 1918.
It is now the HQ of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The large house is still standing, and is now offices and also a place where social functions are held. (I once went to a friend's son's 21st party there)
Buildings have been built for training purposes, and sometimes clouds of smoke can be seen coming from the tower, when they are practising going into smoke filled buildings.
The statue is the Firefighters Memorial,
" Errected by:
Bradford City Council in commemoration of the Devotion to Duty of the Undernamed Members of the Bradford City Fire Brigade who lost their lives in the Explosion caused by the Fire at Low Moor Munition Works on 21st August 1916."
6 Firemen lost their lives, out of a total of 40 people.
However there is no memorial anywhere to the workes who died.
This is No 3 of My Street
Another lovely Spring day here. Hope you are all enjoying the weekend.
