Memorial
This morning's spaniel walk was along part of the South Downs Way over Balmer Down. On the gatepost is a discrete Royal British Legion memorial to those soldiers killed near this spot during military training. Three Privates from Princess Patricia's Canadian Light infantry died here on 20th July 1942. Four troops from the Sherwood Foresters died here on 17th August 1942 and five men of the Welch Regiment were killed here between 29th September and 3rd October 1943. A reminder that these fields and hills were not always as peaceful as they are today.
