The Pitons- St. Lucia
It was worth the hike, or rather the long journey in the back of a minibus to Soufriere in the south of the island nestling under an active volcano and guarded by the iconic Piton mountains.
Christopher Columbus discovered this island in 1502, and many believe it to be the most beautiful of the Caribbean islands.
Another claim to fame for St Lucia is that it has produced two Nobel Prize winners - the Hon Derek Alltom Walcott for Economics in 1979 and Sir William Arthur Lewis for Literature in 1992.
Not bad for an island with a population of 250,000.
Today it is better known as an international venue for beach weddings.
