The big wall

This lunchtime the weather was dry, so for today's walk I decided to head for Gijón's cemetary at Ceares, otherwise know as El Sucu.

I fairly often walk here as it's the nearest large green space to where I work. I haven't been here for a while, but I thought it would be a good place to try out my 'new' lens. It's a second hand SMC Pentax 135mm f2.5, made some time between 1975 and 1985, purchased off eBay.

So none of your new-fangled autofocus, or auto- anything very much. I was hoping to manage to get at least something in focus, even if only the grass.

Anyhow, wandering around the cemetery I came across this monument which I hadn't bumped into previously, despite quite a few visits here both for exercise and recently for a more sombre occasion.

Here there is a wall.

The wall is known as the 'big wall', 'El Paredón'.

El Paredón was the final destination for many hundreds of Gijon's men and women. Shot with, or without, the briefest of summary trials, in the period between the taking of Gijón by the nationalists on 21st October 1937 and 1951.

The memorial was not erected until 2010. It allowed the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the victims to see the names of their family members remembered for the first time, near their final resting places in a common grave.

At its inauguration the memorial listed 1,934 names, 52 of them women.

Back to the photography, this shot, plus a couple of extras, show that I was able to get a few things more or less in focus and correctly exposed. So far so good.
