Split Seconds
It's been several months since we've had a squirrel on our deck, squeezing his body into a suspended bird feeder holding a seed-and-suet cake meant for the birds. Perhaps it was the sunny weather that brought this one round... in any case, he enjoyed breaking off bits of the suet cake and eating them while sitting on the deck railing (see extra photo).
I started off taking photos through the sliding door to the deck, then opened the door a bit and stuck my camera lens through, with no reaction from the squirrel. He remained unconcerned as I slowly moved onto the deck and took more photos, so I ventured even closer, and continued to shoot.
His patience did have limits, however; today's main photo was taken at 2:08:41 p.m., and the extra one at 2:08:39 p.m., a blink of an eye before the main one.
I found it a lovely diversion from the endless U.S. election speculation and commentary. No matter who is elected President, birds will still come to our feeders and squirrels will still raid those feeders!
