Hungry tree?

Blipped this on a hike today. It is the last day of the summer season telecabine so walked up the 500 ish m to the top and enjoyed the ride down. 

We have often walked past this sign in a tree, making our way up the mountain over the last 8 yrs and have noticed the tree gradually 'eating' it!
