In the steps of Tolkien - an awful day !!
Today was one of those memorable days for all the wrong reasons!
Yesterday we drove up from Dorset to Ormskirk having moved Stan out of Ashburton on Thursday .He had been given a trial as a pastry chef at a 2 star Michelin restaurant near Ormskirk which is in Lancashire ( tier 3 ) . We were doubtful about going but couldn’t say no to an opportunity for him so we booked in to a Premier inn for two nights .
On the way to dropping him off at the Restaurant he suddenly sees an email sent the day before cancelling the trial !!! Agh! All that stress at going into a high risk area and tricky logistics for nothing .
I had booked a gastropub in The Trough of Bowland at Hurst Green near Clitheroe for lunch followed by a walk on the Tolkien Trail as he wrote some of Lord of the Rings at Stonyhurst college there.
Stan came with us and lunch was good but things deteriorated after that . We set off in a light shower of rain which progressed into continuous torrential rain for hours . We negotiated a very muddy treacherous slope whereby I was so keen to watch my feet that I slammed into a tree.
Then we followed an optimistic map which looked as though we’d only cover a Mike or do but in fact it turned into 5 miles in the ever persistent rain with Stan arguing the directions were wrong as the walk became a trudge !!!:))
Never have I been so relieved to finish a walk although my foot gave way so Stan and Paul had to get the car for the last quarter of a mile !!
To add insult to injury when we arrived back at the Premier inn wet and cold there was a power cut !! Strictly saved the day . :)
