Desert Island Disc 6
Schubert's Fantasy for violin and piano is on this LP which I bought, by chance, in Paris circa 1982. Later, also by chance, I heard it with my wife during our honeymoon at an open-air concert in the courtyard of Borromini's beautiful Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza in Rome. It is seldom played live, due to the formidable challenges for the performers. According to the sleeve notes the first performance in January 1828, where the violinist was the young virtuoso Josef Slawjk, was met with indifference by the Viennese public and many of them walked out.
