Feeling a bit sad
I'm sure I've mentioned on previous blips my dilemma regarding zoos - feel very much against there existence and yet enjoying the opportunity to see the animals close to, in a way you would probably never get the chance in the wild. This was heightened over the recent lockdown when some zoos were announcing that, with funds running short due to no visitors, they would have to start feeding some of their animals to the other ones. So, do you support them in order to maintain the well being of the animals or not? I don't know. Anyway, I went along to Edinburgh zoo today and came away feeling a bit wretched. Maybe it was because it was a gloomy day anyway but all the animals looked so sad and the place just seemed a bit grim. Lots of families with small children, there to pass the day, and whilst there are educational boards aplenty, I'm not sure that any of them were read. Kids were banging on the glass of the monkey enclosure without parents trying to stop them and, whilst there is much talk of conservation, the food on offer was fast food and the shop was full of plastic toys and other landfill. I think that might be the last time I go.
I was quite pleased with this chimp portrait (the white marks are the filthy glass) and check out the extras for a tiny chimp hiding in its mothers fur. And, I don't know about you, but I'm not fooled by those three penguins!
