Aboriginal Bora Ring
A Bora Ring is an Aboriginal Sacred Site and is a raised platform of dirt arranged in a circle. It was a place used by the aboriginal people for the initiation rites of boys into manhood and the giving of secret knowledge of the tribe, in this case the Bundjalung people from the north of the Clarence River. It is situated about 15 K's south of Lismore on a rural road. Current evidence indicates that the Bundjalung arrived from far northern Australia somewhere around 6000BC and the site was last used by them in the 1800's.
It is situated in a very peacful place on top of a hill with 380 degree views of the surrounding country side. At present it is cared for by NPWS (National Parks and Wildlife) and is fenced and marked with a description plaque. Apparently there was originally a winding path leading up to it but that has been obliterated by farming and cultivations.
Since the 1890's the Bora Ring has also shared part of the hilltop with a small local cemetry so I guess in a way the area is now a sacred site to both cultures and the cemetry has perhaps protected it from being lost.
