Another lost garden
A sunny morning in Oban today but I'd arranged to drive to down to Lochgilphead, an hour or so south, to visit Kilmory again to discuss further the piece of garden taken over by the new Outdoor Nursery. I met three of the ladies involved and had a good look at the big corner bed which is in their corner of the walled garden and marked which plants to keep and which to get rid of. The Estate is now owned by Argyll & Bute Council and the house is their office - see the extra on 5th October - https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2759834215179618015
I had a bit of a wander round some of the garden and saw one rhododendron in flower - see extra - but it's so sad to see what happens to a beautiful woodland garden when it's totally ignored. It's full of huge and wonderful shrubs and trees which are surrounded by brambles and hordes of self-sown sycamores and the like. Fallen trees still rest in the shrubs into which they fell years ago and the paths are slippery with decades of fallen leaves. The council should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and I'm going to ask why nothing is being done. No money, will be the answer, but one good man working one day a week could make huge inroads into the brambles for a start, and a good tree surgeon could make a massive difference in a week by clearing up and logging the fallen trees. No interest more like!
Driving back home the sun came out in time to light up the village of Kilmartin and I just had time to turn down the road to the school and take a picture across the wonderful and historic Kilmartin Glen before it went behind the clouds again. Pity the church got missed out!
