At Brinsworth House Twickenham
Lockdown 2 Day 2. A cycle ride through Twickenham took me past Brinsworth House on Staines Road which I have passed so many times. Also see the extra. This is a home for retired actors and those who have spent their lives serving the entertainment industry and is sometimes referred to as ‘the old pros paradise’ . The house, which now has 40 bedrooms, was built in 1850 and it was bought and set up as a retirement home in 1911. It is owned and maintained by the Royal Variety Charity which was founded in 1908 to care for members of what was at that time , the variety and music hall profession. The proceeds from the Royal Variety Show each year are used to help fund the home.
Unofficial blue plaques have been put up for some of the notable past residents, however they are not visible from the road. Alan Freeman was one of the residents , others who have been given a blue plaque there include....Charlie Drake, Dame Thora Hird, John Inman and Danny la Rue.
