Don’t fence me in!
Last night the students on Manchester Uni’s Fallowfield campus, the beating heart of student life in this city, had finally had enough. Cooped up in their tiny student accommodation for weeks they suddenly found tall wire fences surrounding their halls of residence effectively imprisoning them in their rooms without any consultation ( for which the University later apologised) so last night it all kicked off and enraged students tore down the fences which had all disappeared by the time we got there today.
The students are just beginning to realise they have been mightily ripped off by our now effectively privatised higher education system laid bare by the Covid crisis. 9k a year plus expensive accommodation for online lectures and no face to face teaching violates the very idea of a University education, and students are just beginning to realise it. Just one more way that this is a generation betrayed.
