Finding My Bearings

The Flag Lady!

Despite war memorials now being deemed COVID-19 hotspots, a few local dignitaries summoned up their best ‘Dunkirk spirit’ and braved the danger to place wreaths at our village one this morning. There were, of course, also several other brilliant displays in parks, on lampposts, benches, bus stops and in people’s windows but my blip HAD to be this.

The Flag Lady (a.k.a. Margaret) lives on one of the main roads in town and has become something of a legend, having countless flags for every occasion and celebrating every special event by decorating her house. A huge crowd surprised her on her 90th birthday last week by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her, showing just how much she means to them.

The highlight of the year is always her Remembrance Day display. It’s actually twice as big as this and there’s also a very tall flagpole but I couldn’t get it all in the picture! If you zoom in to the table, you can see a black and white photo of her father on a horse. She found the sepia photo hidden behind another one many years ago and doesn’t know who the young man is so he’s there to represent the Unknown Soldier.

Definitely a memorable memorial!
