Remembrance

My image for Remembrance Sunday is what remains of a Stranger's Cemetery. Soldiers were laid to rest here in the 19th century as well as 'strangers' (those who had no roots in the island and could be buried here regardless of religion). This particular Strangers Cemetery was also used during a cholera epidemic. The graveyard itself is long gone but this gate remains to remind us of those who lie beyond it.

Another Strangers Cemetery was opened after this one, situated not too far away. During the occupation in WW2, fallen 'forced labour' workers from many countries were buried here and German soldiers who never made it home.

It's worth adding that the gate in this picture was rusted, derelict and unmarked until 2019 when a local man facilitated its renovation. A student created the eye catching mural and a plaque was erected so that passers by and those who seek out such historic sites will be able to remember them.
