Life through the lens...

By ValC

Roundheads and Cavaliers.

A walk today round Mr C’s old haunts in the nearby village.
Main reason was to find his great grandmother’s grave, and that of his grandparents.
We found them eventually, and as the church was surprisingly open we also had a look inside.
We had a very cheery greeting from two ladies who were on duty.
Of course Mr C had a chat, reminiscing about old times.
The church had been totally modernised since the last time we had been inside.
Beautifully done too. Partly with a grant from The Lottery.
You can see the repairs to some of the stone work in the collage.

Further down the lane we passed Lumb Hall with the beautiful round window. This house was built in 1600’s . A “ Halifax” house design.
Grade 1 listed. In private ownership, but we went to a party there many years ago. Fabulous inside.

After a walk round the rest of the village we finished off on Adwalton Moor. ( see plaque)
A famous battle in the English Civil War took place here.
This was where the Earl of Newcastle had a victory over Lord Fairfax and the Parliamentarians on 30th June 1643.
Something Mr C says they were told many times at junior school.
“ Rammed down our throats” I believe were his words!
