Highways

We left Tarvin and headed down to the River Gowy. The sun was shining and the sky blue.

At the first crossroad we headed down Platt Lane. A narrow path with tall banks, to keep the surrounding marshes at bay. This has been a thoroughfare since Roman times, perhaps earlier. It was part of the medieval route from London to Holyhead. Trains of packhorses would have carried salt from the Cheshire salt towns to their destinations.

At Hockenhull Platts are three Packhorse bridges known as the Roman bridges. There has been a river crossing here since Roman times, perhaps earlier. The current structures were built in the 18th centuary and are listed buildings. Some of these setts and cobbles are original. How many feet and hooves have passed this way?
