The Meeting Point

Cape Reinga, almost the most northerly point of New Zealand, is where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Here you can see the change in colour that indicates this meeting point.

To the Maori this rocky promontory is a deeply sacred place, as here the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.

The ancient pohutuukawa tree you can just see (you may need to go large), clinging to the rock, seems to survive in almost impossible conditions.

And to anyone who wants to know, we used the road to get here, not the Ninety Mile Beach (the insurance on the rental car wouldn't let us do that!). We did however watch vehicles starting out on the drive along the beach.
