Village Remeberance Exhibition

..In Flanders fields
The poppies grow
Between the crosses
Row on row
That mark our place
We are the dead...

Pootled down to the church to visit on the remeberance exhibition, decorated with a variety of wool knitted and paper poppies.

Lots of interesting stories of villagers who died &/or fought in both world wars. I remember speaking to Arthur in the village pub a few times on first moving here. Aged 99, he survived 60 sorties as a navigator in Mosquitos and Wellington Bombers. He now lives in a local care home.

Had a sombre view of gravediggers preparing for the burial, of a much loved villager, who used his carpentry skills in both the church and the cricket club.

He can no longer appear as Father Christmas at the annual carol singing on our small green. I guess that prized role passes down by inheritance to his son that lives in the village.

With my wife out, I enjoyed listening to some vinyl and for some reason selected "Join Hands" by Siouxsie & The Banshees that I'd not played for years - first track "Poppy Day (2 minutes silence)" - lyrics at the top & see extra..
