Ramblings in Life

Solemn Moment

I head out for a walk this afternoon (surprise surprise, its my main hobby at the moment). On the map I'd spotted some structure/ruin in the forest so thought I'd take a look.

I was a bit taken aback when I got there. The structures were the remains of a rifle range first constructed before WW1, then used again during WW2. A little information sign explained that they had been used both for practice, as well as for the execution of POW & deserters. This point was particularly humbling, given today is the national day of mourning here in Germany.

To one side of the rifle ranges was this sculpture. It was a suitable focal point for reflection on what had passed here in these now silent woods.
