A rare sight
Parkgate used to be a busy port. Handel landed here in 1741 (Wiki) but it's been more than 150 years since sailing was possible due to silting. Now it's a vast saltmarsh which experiences a couple of high tides each year when the marshes are covered by water from the tidal River Dee. I've been there several times to witness the event, but nature has controlled the winds and tides and I've never seen the full monty. I got lucky today. It was amazing...as the water swirled towards the promenade, voles, rats and mice fled for their lives from the flood, only to be picked off by gulls, hen harriers or short eared owls. Thousands of geese flew overhead and there were plenty of egrets, herons and plenty more. There could be another high tide tomorrow...I'm going back, just in case.
