Scotland Day 6

We had booked into a site a mile walk along the canal to the Falkirk Wheel. Our heart sank when we pulled in as it was little more than a patch of gravel in a wooded area, with a UFO landing site! The mix of vehicles, vans, posh motorhomes and tents was random, and none of the usual rules and regulations associated with the more manicured sites -but the atmosphere was brilliant, the owner (an artist) was most welcoming and engaging, even offering pony and trap rides. Whereas on arrival we wondered if we would survive the night, by the end of our 2 night stay we were planning our return. Under normal circumstances his gallery is open and he organises ceilidh  - can't wait.
The £20m Falkirk Wheel opened in 2002 links the Fort and Clyde Canal 115ft below. The wheel is the first and only rotating boat lift in the world.

61km Forth and Clyde canal goes from Glasgow to the Firth of Forth and is the only sea to sea ship canal and has 38 locks, 38 bridges, 25 aqueducts.

The 51 km Union canal has 84 bridges, 24 aqueducts and a 630 m tunnel. Starting at the wheel it had no locks until it was extended to meet the Falkirk Wheel . It ends in Edinburgh.
