Walking On Wirral
Normally when we head to Wirral we usually stick to the coast but today we went to Thurstaton Common and Royden Park.
We climbed the standstone Ridge to the trig and viewing points and our reward was uninterupted views of Liverpool and Snowdonia and further up the north west coast. We were even able to pick out Blackpool Tower without field glasses.
Two other notable features on the walk were a C19th mock Tudor house that used to stand on Bidston Hill and which, in 1931, was rebuilt here. Internally there are some very fine features including a Robert Adam fireplace and stained glass windows by William Morris. And Thor's stone, a huge standstone rock which we climbed. Local legend would have it that this was a place of worship and sacrifice for the Viking settlers. However the truth is that more likely it was the mount for a crane in an old standstone quarry.
