Linking Newcastle and Gateshead across the Tyne

It's 20 years today since the Gateshead Millennium Bridge was lowered into place as thousands of spectators looked on. This bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne between the Gateshead arts quarter on the south bank and the Quayside of Newcastle on the north bank. The story began in 1996 when Gateshead Council took the bold decision to enter the race for millennium funding and announced a design competition for a new bridge.  Over 150 entries were received from architects and engineers around the world and the entry from Gifford and Partners (engineers) and Wilkinson Eyre (architects) was unanimously chosen by the panel of judges. The unique “blinking eye” tilting design of the bridge was a world first for Tyneside. The bridge was opened to the public in September 2001.
