Walking the walls

With routes east closed to us we looked for western alternatives. At the west end of Portobello beach we saw an archery practice. This is a new activity to add to the list of beach activities. As we climbed onto the sea wall we were walking above and behind their target. It was a slightly unnerving experience!

The sea wall skirted the Seafield Sewage treatment works. The whiff and the industrial views of the distant iconic Edinburgh skyline explained why we did not encounter many walkers. Nor did we see any seals as we had hoped. They often rest on the rocks here but not today.

The walk took us on to the old railway towards Leith but we veered east to visit Lochend Park. In all the years we have lived in the city we have never been to this park. It has a small Loch that used to supply drinking water to Leith and a doocot that used to supply fresh fowl to Lochend Castle whose remnants still cling to the crags above the Loch.

By the time we had climbed Smokey Brae we were still three miles from home so we trundled home on the trusty 26 bus. Sufficiently masked, stepped and miled for today!

[In the extras I have included some industrial views from our walk.]
