A memorial stone close to the north entrance of Almondell Country Park may well be the earliest surviving memorial in Scotland dedicated to William Wallace.

It has the Latin inscription which translates to ‘Sacred to the memory of William Wallace October 15th 1784’ and was erected by the 11th Earl of Buchan who owned the estate at that time.

WW was said to have hunted on Drumshoreland Muir and conducted patrols while keeping watch on the army of King Edward.

The stone’s location is said to mark the spot where Wallace and his men observed the English army who were camped at nearby Kirkliston (then known as Temple Liston in July 1298, just before the Battle of Falkirk).
