The Buckingham Chained Swan
The Monastic Hostel known as Buckingham College (1428), was refounded in 1542 as St Mary Magdalene College, Cambridge. Seen from River Court, the Buckingham Chained Swan (1873) is on the gable apex of the gatehouse. I took this view standing on Magdalene Bridge over the river Cam. I have since discovered that the traditional flag of Buckinghamshire, features a chained and collared swan. The emblem dates from the Anglo-Saxon times when Buckinghamshire was known for breeding swans for the king.
