In praise of the public broadcaster
We ‘attended’ by Zoom a Friends of the ABC event at which the Australian Broadcasting Corporation received the Friends’ annual award for excellence in broadcasting. Normally this award goes to an individual, but this year it was awarded to the ABC as a whole. This was in recognition of the extraordinary contribution of the public broadcaster in providing trustworthy information and crisis support, first in the January bushfires and now in the Covid pandemic.
On the screen are two of our favourite broadcasters. Fran Kelly has done the Breakfast program, from home (with occasional assistance from Buster her dog), and Dr Norman Swan has been a constant source of objective information and calm advice about Covid.
The ABC has made these last months a lot easier, and the award is so well deserved.
