I believe that something like the above, but substituting the name for a number, was used at places like Butlins holiday parks, at boating ponds to let the rower know when to return to the pier. However, this boat is a Hopper Dredger, by the name of Magni R, it is 75 metres long, built in 1996 and sails under the flag of Denmark. It definitely wouldn't fit in a boating pond.
