Page 1 - the beginning
Following on from yesterday's blip - this is the ticket and programme from the first concert I went to.
Getting a ticket for a concert was a quite different proposition back then to what it has now become.
No internet frenzy, no busy phone lines.
If you wanted a ticket, you mainly had to go to the venue box office or ticket agency/record shop to buy it.
For in-demand acts, that meant queuing up before the on-sale time in the hope that you'd get there early enough to get to the front of the queue before the tickets were sold out.
I did once queue up for hours to get a ticket to see Eurythmics at the Apollo, only to get almost to the front of the queue (only 5 people in front of me) before it sold out. Something remarkably similar happened with The Police. I never did see either act, and am not sure I ever did get over these disappointments, although I have since seen Sting solo a couple of times, and eventually saw Annie Lennox many, many years later!
As you can see from the ticket, for this first of many early Sunday mornings queuing up at the Apollo or the Locarno/Tiffany's. I did eventually (after a few hours) get to the front of the queue and secured my place in the Upper Circle.
£4.50 to see Paul McCartney!
I have seen him a further 7 times since then - all at considerably greater expense! All equally worth it.
This concert was recorded (audio), and a few months later Paul McCartney released the single Coming Up. In the UK, the single's A-Side was a studio recording, with the B-Side featuring the live version recorded at this Glasgow concert. In the US, the live track was the A-Side, and it got to Number One in the chart.
So I can definitely say that I have featured on a number one single. Go on, have a listen - I'm sure you'll hear me! ;)
