I have such an interesting room-mate! They know so much stuff about which I am totally ignorant!
This evening they have hosted a dinner party with guests as diverse at Victoria Wood, Bob Monkhouse and Barbara Cartland. Astonishing! I hadn't even been aware that Victoria is no longer with us.
Before the dinner guests arrived, my room-mate had told me that when Britain abolished slavery in the 1800s, British tax-payers had had to foot the bill for paying compensation to British slave-owners and that that debt was not finally paid off until 2015
Pause for thought
In 2015 I was living in Greece and Wolfgang Schäuble was imposing debts on me and my neighbours that we knew could not be paid off in 40 years.
40 years/200 years. I think it is right that modern British tax-payers should be allowed to choose which historical characters are revered and which are melted down.
I did take some time out today and switched my room-mate off while I was gone.
The fog in the Medway estuary was coming in faster than I could walk towards its mouth, so I had to turn back for lack of anything the camera could see.
