A verderer...

I was back in Epping today and popped back to where I had seen this blue plaque yesterday.
I’ve had to look up the term Verderer. Apparently they are officials who deal with common land in certain former royal hunting areas which were the property of the Crown. In the modern era, verderers are still to be found in Epping Forest where they serve to protect commoning practices, and conserve the traditional landscape and wildlife. They can also be found in the New Forest and the Forest of Dean.
