Saltpan

Before refrigeration, meat and fish were preserved using salt...often harvested from the sea.

One of the best salt pans in England is not far from Cockermouth...it's at Crosscannonby, near Maryport on The Solway Coast.

It's worth googling to see how they got the salt crystals from the sea salt water...

There was a very strong cold wind as I was taking these photos, so different from yesterday's mist and murk.
