Them’s the brakes ....
A day I should have stayed in bed !
First job was to to find a missing cow when I fed the spring calvers. Eventually found her down in the rushes at the far side of the field . Looks like she has made a nest ready to calve. Eventually remembered she was PDd 2 months in calf in May and chucked out here with the spring calvers ( and promptly forgotten about !)
Back in to feed the silage to the slats cattle when herd came in with a cow and calf as the calf flat out with the scour. So had to pen her up and stomach tube the calf with scour electrolyte , which goes like wall paper paste in about 5 minutes so then won’t go down the tube if you take too long.
By this time it was after 10 am so sent 2 over next door to help wee brother bring in his spring calvers to wean their calves .
It was nearer 11 by the time I got there as the herds needed the Landrover to cart Blackface ewe hoggs to their winter grazing down the road and it wouldn’t start. Eventually traced the problem to a flat battery in the key fob !
Just got in for a late lunch when a lorry from Carr’s Billington arrived in with sheep feed blocks - as usual no “ phone 24 hrs before delivery “ . By the time I emptied him it wasn’t worth lunch.
Went to check this morning’s cow and was confronted by a pair of front feet and a water bag poking out her , so back home to round up a crew to bring her in. By the time we got back to the field though she had calved and was being protective, so she can get on with it and see what happens !
Then a trip to my mechanic pal tonight to get the brakes sorted on Mrs F’s car. Had to make a detour round by Gala coming home as they had shut the A68 at Soutra. Home by 11pm . Had enough for one day. Better try and get out the opposite side of the bed tomorrow !
