I picked this one up again. Now that I have reading glasses that function as advertised, I can enjoy it. 

Boiled some of the prize quinces with a little sugar last night. The compot is remarkably good - with no effort, save for picking the frozen quinces from their thorny nests. A light wash and no peeling or paring - I just jabbed them lightly with a fork when they were simmering.

Enquired about a new element for the kiln - seems to be no problem and not particularly expensive. The chap at the place where I bought the wheel was most helpful. The local arts centre [closed for the duration] has a brand new kiln. Maybe I'll be able to test it?
